Music promotion is the most slippery aspect of building a music career. It’s difficult for many indie artists to really handle and understand. Plus, it’s a long process that often needs careful thought and planning to get it right.
So to help you out, I want to share seven of the best music promotion sites for groups and solo artists.
1. Your website
Your website needs to include anything and everything your fans would want to see or hear. This includes your music, whether you use an embedded player or link to streaming services. Also tour dates and merch. You need an 'About' page where people can get to know you.
Why it’s good for music promotion.
Your official music website is the headquarters for your music career.
When you announce new concert dates, people will go to your site to confirm when and where you’re playing. When you promote your new merch, you display it on your site. When you drop a new song, yes, most people will look it up on their preferred platform – but the story of what inspired that song can be on your website for fans to experience.
On top of all this, you want to be the top search result on Google. You don’t want the first thing new people see to be interviews you’ve done or the YouTube channel you barely use. People have to easily find your website.
2. TikTok
TikTok is much more than a dancing app. Think of it like a short-form version of YouTube. Whatever topic you’re interested in, you can find a community that’s also interested in it. And this is great news for us artists. This app is currently the best music promotion tool available to indie musicians.
Why it’s good for music promotion
TikTok’s bread and butter is its algorithm. As a user, your feed includes posts primarily from people you’ve never heard of. The algorithm curates videos it thinks you will like based on your previous activity. And it’s creepily accurate.
For example, if you engage with a video (watch, like, comment) about gardening, the algorithm goes, “Oh you like gardening? I’ll cue up some more gardening-related videos!”
So why is this great for indie musicians? Let’s say you shoot a little video of yourself playing the chorus of your song. The algorithm will show that video to people who enjoy watching artists play their songs. This is the ideal scenario for artists looking to grow their audience.
3. Instagram
After TikTok exploded in popularity a few years ago, other social media sites started to emulate how it operated. Instagram added Reels, which is basically its own version of TikTok – short videos tailored to the viewer based on their previous activity.
Why it’s good for music promotion.
I’ve found it’s a good place to both get discovered by new people via Reels and also engage with your audience through posts and Reels.
You can post a Reel and connect with new people. One artist we work with Reels went mini-viral and it drastically boosted the streams of the song in that Reel (it’s now my most-streamed song).
And the nice thing is, you can post your TikToks on Reels and vice versa. That way, you’re not creating a ton of extra work for yourself, yet you’re still getting your music in front of new people.
4. SubmitHub
SubmitHub is a platform that connects artists with Spotify playlisters, bloggers, YouTube channels, social media influencers, and indie record labels. And you can choose which type of curator you want to submit your music to.
I do want to point out – you’ll need to pay a few bucks for Premium Credits to get any attention. Premium Credits move you to the front of the submission line and ensure the curators listen to your full song (however, Premium Credits do not guarantee getting featured). You do get free submission credits, but as far as I know many other artists haven’t had much luck with those.
Why it’s good for music promotion
Many curators only accept submissions through SubmitHub, so this is the only way to get on those playlists. These are curators who are actively looking for new music.
Through SubmitHub, we’ve gotten on several Spotify playlists where a bunch of people have streamed my music, so I know it works. So if playlisting is a priority for you as a way to market your music, it’s worth a try. And even more so if you also want to submit to other types of curators or record labels.
And the more playlists you get on, the more likely it is to trigger the Spotify algorithm. Which could then lead to your songs getting pushed out via Radio, Daily Mixes, and other algorithmic playlists.
5. Spotify
Spotify is the biggest streaming platform in the world. It’s where most people listen to music. And while that means it’s a crowded place with tons of other musicians, it’s still a place where listeners find new artists. We found a lot of artists through Spotify Radio and Daily Mix algorithmic playlists.
Why it’s good for music promotion
Most of my streams on Spotify (about 57% in the past 28 days) are from “Programmed sources.” For me, this mostly includes Spotify’s algorithmic playlists, like Radio and Daily Mixes.
If you can trigger the Spotify algorithm – get on Radio, Daily Mix, and other algorithmic playlists – then it will basically do the promotion for you. Yes, many of the people listening algorithmically are listening passively. But if your song is good enough, it will stop the listener in their tracks. They may then add your song to their Liked songs and/or their own playlist.
Spotify also has paid promotion features, like Showcase and Marquee as well as Discovery Mode. They’re even rolling out Spotify Clips, which is its answer to short-form content.
6. YouTube
Many artists were discovered or at least got their start on YouTube. Tori Kelly, Shawn Mendes, Alessia Cara, Ren, and so many others. And YouTube is still a very good place to discover music.
Why it’s good for music promotion
In September 2020 as TikTok was gaining traction, YouTube launched Shorts, its take on short-form content. This, along with its established long-form video feed, has made YouTube a good place for musicians to post videos that share their music.
So you can post longer videos, like performances or cool-looking music videos, and then you can cut those videos into under 60-second snippets for YouTube Shorts. That way, you can get discovered by new fans whether they prefer scrolling Shorts or their normal YouTube feed.
