5 ways to get to know your fanbase

Without a doubt, understanding your audience is crucial for music artists. Fanbases are the cornerstone of most careers in the industry.

Without a doubt, understanding your audience is crucial for music artists. Fanbases are the cornerstone of most careers in the industry. Our most loyal supporters and the foundation of our community. They are always there to listen to every song, whether it's a success or a failure, share the news about your releases, and assure you that the music you produce is truly connecting with someone.

However, getting to understand your fanbase can be more challenging than it appears. While you may be familiar with the individuals who regularly engage with you, what about the remainder of your fanbase?

Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Here are 5 quick tips to get to know your fanbase:

1. Check your demographics

Tools provided by social media and streaming platforms have simplified the process of understanding your fanbase. By examining your demographics on platforms such as Spotify, TikTok, and Instagram, you can gain insights into which age group, gender, and country are the primary consumers of your music.

Creating a music website provides a great opportunity to analyze your site’s traffic effectively. Utilize landing pages to gain insights into specific marketing campaigns through page-level data, or review your reports to learn more about your audience's interests, music preferences, and geographical location.

Knowing this basic information about your fans can give you a good idea of which elements of culture are relevant to their age group, as well as what kind of merch might sell the best. It can also help you figure out where to go on tour next, or why what you’re already doing is working well.

2. Engagements

Reviewing your interactions is a great method to understand your followers better. Observing how they engage with your videos, photos, and latest releases is more crucial than many realize. Even the minor interactions, like 'likes' on videos, can provide insight into the type of content your fans prefer and what doesn't resonate as strongly.

Understanding the significance lies in the fact that your fanbase is essentially the foundation of your career. Identifying what truly connects with them and drives their interaction with you and your creations is crucial for advancing your career and nurturing a strong bond with your supporters!

3. Check your ‘Fans Also Liked’

Although it may appear obvious, many individuals overlook the incredible utility of the 'Fans Also Liked' feature. Remember, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Analyzing the artists that your fans enjoy listening to can provide valuable insights into the preferences of your fanbase.

It not only helps you understand their music preferences but also indicates their demographic and offers a real-life example of their current interests.

For example, if Drake is included in your 'fans liked' category, but Kendrick Lamar/KDot is included in your 'fans also liked' category, you may want to focus on studying Kendrick Lamar early on. This fanbase could be a more accurate representation of those who are likely listening to your music.

Understanding a person's likes and interests is crucial when trying to get to know them, don't you think?

4. Interact with them

Engaging with fans is likely the best way to establish a genuine connection with them on a personal level. This involves acknowledging and interacting with the comments and interactions they make on your posts. In addition, you can involve them in fan giveaways, decision-making processes (like selecting set lists, recording choices, song titles, etc.), and various other aspects of your professional journey. It's essential to grow your mailing list to maintain communication with your most dedicated fans. You can even create an online community, a topic we will discuss in our final point.

It’s important to note that while the previous suggestions for getting to know your fans were more generalized, creating this individual bond with your fans and getting to know them personally can really help you understand them and can create a long and lasting relationship.

5. Build a community

Finally, don't forget to focus on establishing a fanbase for your community!

Creating a community is a great way not just to connect with your fans, but also to foster connections among them! This elevates your understanding of your fans from an individual level to a broader perspective, enabling you to observe the conversations they engage in about your music (and other topics) and participate in those discussions whenever possible!

One challenge is that it can be somewhat challenging to oversee, but once you have dedicated fans whom you can rely on, you can always seek their assistance in managing it. Additionally, this approach can help your fans unite and collectively establish their identity (think “Swifties”).

Artists sometimes give their fanbases unique names, offering them exclusive previews and involving them in decisions such as choosing album art or selecting which demos to release next.

You can establish a similar community by introducing fan subscriptions through platforms like Discord or any other that suits your style, your art, and your audience.

Regardless of the platform you choose, you will be nurturing a strong and enduring bond with your fans, enabling you to connect with them on a more personal level.

There are numerous methods to familiarize yourself with your fanbase. Whether you opt for an individual or community-oriented approach, or utilize online analytics, there are proven strategies to help you achieve this. We encourage you to experiment with these techniques to gain deeper insights into the individuals who form your fan base.

It is worth emphasizing that your fans are crucial to your career. When they support you at every stage, you should also support them. We hope you succeed in developing and understanding your fan base!
